Data Privacy: Yours… and your students’
With the continual emergence of new technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and “Internet of Things” (IoT), our data is increasingly becoming more exposed. This exposure of our data, including personally identifiable information as well as your email address, phone number, or sensitive banking information, creates opportunities for advertisers or “dark web” actors who want to use our information for their benefit. Websites and mobile apps are in the business of collecting (and using or selling) our information. This session will examine Data Privacy, from a personal and professional perspective, and we’ll discuss federal guidelines (COPPA/CIPA) on student data and security that educators need to consider when bringing innovation into the classroom.

The Modern Classroom Model: Blended, Self-Paced, Mastery-Based Learning
The goal of my presentation is to introduce the Modern Classroom Project movement that can transform any classroom with these key components: blended learning, self-pacing, and frequent mastery checks. Teachers create short instructional videos which students watch and then work on activities at their own pace. The teacher is able to work with students individually or in small groups which allows greater knowledge of each student’s abilities and challenges. Learning is broken down into small chunks with students taking a short mastery check showing whether they are ready to move on.
Participants will be engaged by experiencing a Modern Classroom in action! The learning target would be: I can explain how a Modern Classroom would help me better differentiate and know my students’ abilities through three key components: blended instruction, self-pacing, and mastery checks. Participants would watch a short introduction video, engage in activities to create a student tracker of assignments, and take a mastery check to complete the final step.

See a roadmap here: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1LgzlinbVRhpirEvRMx8N_dWCP5eqH9GwAK_oHEsMMes/edit?usp=sharing

Key takeaways will be for teachers to consider signing up for the free Modern Classroom Project virtual course which walks them through implementing the process. Teachers will be encouraged to try recording short instructional videos and plan follow-up activities for students to do which will free up the teacher to work with students in small groups or individually. By eliminating the whole group instruction, students will ease into working at their own pace.

Spice Up Your Professional Development with Educator Voice and Choice
Professional development is helpful, but the way it is designed is not always helpful. While educators are encouraged to design learner-centered environments and provide learners with voice and choice, learning opportunities for educators do not always look this way. In a world where educators need to learn future-ready tech tools and tips to design engaging learning environments for their students, it is critical that the precious time they have for PD is productive and impactful. In this session, we will explore ways leadership and coaches can design educator-centered PD, taking lessons from some of the PD formats we were forced to utilize from the pandemic, and how those modalities can have a lasting impact. Examples will include podcast PD, virtual coaching sessions, gamified PD, and credentialing. Attendees will walk away with practical ideas, and an opportunity to plan to implement these tips in their role.

Collaborate, Create, and Connect: Inspiring Ideas for Technology in Music Education
In music education, classes are designed to embrace the national standards centered around student performance. Which makes it difficult to embrace technology to collaborate, create, and connect with students and full fill other national standards. This session will feature three different free technologies that educators can directly use in their classroom with students at all grade levels. First, we’ll explore Chrome Music Lab's ‘experiments’ and then learn how to use them to create improvisation and composition lessons. Secondly, we’re going to look at three different methods of adding audio to Google Slides and how they can be used to create a collaborative audio lesson with students. Finally, we are going to finish with a look at using the Google Chrome extension - Music Snippet to insert music notation into Google Docs or Slides.

Music educators, instructional coaches, and other specialists will enjoy an interactive and hands-on approach to these technology tools and leave with practical and direct applications for the classroom. Audience members will need a laptop or tablet to participate. All other materials will be provided to them in the clinic.

Training Creators: Canva for Littles
Students learn by doing. That’s our mission with this session… training young creators and that starts with having training for our teachers! With two presenters, we will be able to aid attendees while explaining the ins and outs of Canva. Attendees will have time to create and ask questions by the end of the session. This session will include tips and tricks for Canva beginners, as well as Canva pros! There are many recently released updates and features that allow students to create to take control of their learning. Some tools we plan to cover are as simple as finding the right template for your needs all the way to their newly released Magic Edit tool. It can be intimidating to use tools like Canva with young learners, but with the proper guidance and the help of our premade templates, we hope to lighten the workload. This session is geared toward K-2 teachers, but teachers of all grade levels can benefit! What better way to flip the script than to allow students to create and become the masters of their learning instead of just the students?! During our session, teachers will leave with new tools, templates (primary & intermediate), and perspectives on using tech with young learners!

Up Sheets Creek
Google Sheets has so many different functions that can be used throughout a classroom on a regular basis - so this is going to showcase 3 of those functions. We will be using Google Sheets to create Escape Room activities, collecting data on content assessments, sending home communication/communicating with staff. For the escape rooms I will share a template and then walk thru a few different ways that this can be modified for multiple contents. To use as a data assessment piece we will look at all the functionality that the settings in a Google form can do and then linking those to a Google sheet to then analyze the data. These two items can be done with no previous skill or knowledge of Google for Education tools. For communication, this is integrating Slides/Forms/Sheets together using the auto-crat add-on. This is building on to those basic skills and for anyone with intermediate knowledge of the Google For Education tools prior to the session. This can be used to send common communication home to parents but wanting to include specifics to a particular child - maybe a grade update. It can be used to create PD certificates or any certificate that you may want to give inside a classroom or for a staff setting. A folder of templates connected together already will be shared and then we will walk thru creating their own.

Harnessing the power of student feedback to amplify their voices for equitable classrooms
Student voice, though seldom measured, has the power to transform the culture of a classroom to be more equitable and engaging. The simple act of soliciting student feedback on their engagement, paired with evidence-based teaching strategies, helps educators improve student learning and create more equitable and engaging classrooms.
Research demonstrates that engaged students are more successful academically. When students are invested, their learning grows exponentially. And teachers need student feedback to grow as educators. However, it is hard for educators to know which aspects of their lessons keep students engaged, and to stay abreast of the latest research and instructional technology resources that can improve engagement.
Come learn in this engaging and dynamic session how the South Bend Empowerment Zone is collectively using student voice and engagement data from LessonLoop to inform instructional practice, focus professional learning, and create more active, nurturing, and equitable classrooms.

Using a Framework to Make Better Decisions with Technology
The purpose of this session is to help educators and others working with students to focus more on the WAY in which these technologies are being used rather than the many different technologies and web applications available. First, there will be a review of the SAMR model (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification and Redefinition) which is helpful in understanding the potential for transforming learning with technology along with examples. Also, a framework developed by the presenter CHOICE (Collaborative, Higher-Level of Thinking, Open-Ended, Individualized, Contextual, and Engaging) shares 6 ways to assure that students will be gaining the most from the use of technology. This session will help all participants not only understand how to select the best technologies but know how to use technology to make the greatest impact on student learning.
